Our downtown boasts historic architecture, loft apartments, a budding artistic culture, a variety of dining experiences, and a multi-faceted business community.

Monroe is the county seat of Monroe County. In downtown you will find the City and County government offices, both City and County police departments, the County Courthouse, and the U.S. Post Office.

Our cultural and entertainment areas include both the Monroe County Historical Museum, the Monroe County Labor History Museum, the historic River Raisin Centre for the Arts, the Dorsch Memorial Library, art galleries, and dancing and live music at our many eateries and bars. Relax at the local coffee houses. In the summer, enjoy outdoor entertainment from music to movies at the bandshell in St. Mary’s Park as well as outdoor activities and events throughout the downtown area.

Our local farmer’s market has fresh homegrown produce, flowers and crafts every Tuesday and Saturday from 6 am to noon at 20 East Willow Street.

Surrounding our downtown and within walking distance are historic residential neighborhoods, churches of various denominations, both public and private schools and Mercy Memorial Hospital.

Adjacent to the downtown district are additional businesses including hardware, clothing and grocery stores.

Lake Erie Transit, our local public transportation bus service, services the downtown as well as the outlying districts.

A bike/walking path and our Riverwalk connects many city parks throughout the city.
